Lions Golf 11th after first round at Regional I-2A Tournament

ODESSA - The OHS Lions Golf Team finished the first round of the Regional I-2A Tournament Monday in 11th place. 

Senior Riley Williams leads the team after shooting an 83. 

The team will head back to Ratliff Ranch Golf Links for the second round on Tuesday with rain forecasted overnight and throughout the day. 

Full results will be reported in the May 1 Ozona Stockman.

Lions advance to regional track meet

The OHS Track Teams competed at the Districts 7/8-2A Area Meet on April 10 in Mertzon. Ozona had three individuals and one relay qualify to move on to the Region 1-2A Track and Field Championships on April 26-27 at South Plains College in Levelland. Manuel Torralba and Humberto Torralba placed first and second, respectively, in the 800 meters. They then switched places in the 1600 meters. Sebastian De La Crub placed third in the 100 meters. The 1600 relay of Zachary Talamantez, De La Cruz and the Torralba brothers placed third. The top four finishers in each individual event advance.

Lady Lions take district title

With a 14-6 victory Friday night over McCamey, the OHS Lady Lions Softball Team clinched the district championship.

“This team is a special bunch. They’ve learned to play hard with and for each other, and that’s what won this game. I say it week in and week out...I’m so proud of this bunch. They are special and we are going to continue to work hard to see how far this thing goes,” said Coach Joe Moore.

The Lady Lions will finish the regular season on April 18 against Marfa. Game time is 5:30 pm in Marfa.

Lions dominate Fort Hancock

The OHS Lions Baseball team swept Fort Hancock in a double header Saturday. In the first game, the Lions won 20-6. Pitcher Abey Lara had 10 strikeouts and 21 first pitch strikes. Jaden Fay had three hits with four RBIs. Ethan Criswell had two hits. Jose Dominguez had 2 RBIs. The Lions easily won the second game, 18-8. Pitcher Justin Yeager had three strikeouts and 10 first pitch strikes. Yeager also had three hits. Jesse Vega had two hits and three RBIs. Lara had three hits. Arlie Hernandez had three RBIs. On April 2, Ozona fought back but fell short to McCamey, 10-8. The Lions were down 10-4 headed into the seventh inning. Ozona scored four runs in the final inning, but errors were costly against Badgers. Pitcher Dominguez had four strikeouts and nine first pitch strikes. Yeager had seven first pitch strikes. Hernandez had two hits and two RBIs. Dominguez had three RBIs. The Lions are 13-6-1 overall. Ozona begin its series against Eldorado Friday at 4:30 p.m. in Eldorado.

Lady Lions sweep Van Horn, Marfa

The Lady Lions swept Van Horn and Marfa for district wins last week.

On April 2, Ozona beat Van Horn in a double header 11-2 and 23-6.

“There was good team defense and solid pitching contributed to an overall strong effort. The bats got going in the second game to end it in the fifth,” said Coach Joe Moore.

Mariana Garza scored seven runs, had three RBIs and played solid defense.

Lucy Rodriguez scored three times and had two RBIs.

Lady Lions sweep Marfa in double header

Lady Lions sweep a big double header vs Marfa 14-8 and 11-6 respectfully.

It was a total team effort in both games. Good defense, great pitching, and timely hits helped the Lady Lions pull away.

“I’m so incredibly proud of this bunch of kids...they played their tails off,” said Coach Joe Moore.

UPDATE: 3-PETE! Lions make it three in a row with District 7-2A Championship!

CHRISTOVAL – The OHS Varsity Lions Track Team won their third consecutive district championship Thursday night at the District 7-2A Meet.

The Lions were headed into Thursday’s final running events in fourth place, 42 points behind first place Winters. Miles was in second and Eldorado was in third.

On Thursday, the Lions made a comeback by scoring 108 points to finish in first, ahead of Winters who finished with 123 points.

“A comeback despite headwinds and an obstacle course placed in the kids’ path. A testimony to heart,” said Coach Kyle Freeman.
