Lions play hard, fall short to Broncos

Zachary Talamantez sprints for the Lion touchdown during Friday's game against Sonora.

LION STADIUM - The Ozona Lions fought hard in their season opener against the Sonora Broncos, despite the 34-19 loss.

"We executed well. We have some growing up to do in some positions. I'm proud of ya'll. You all played well," said Head Coach Kyle Freeman to his team after the game.

It would be a back and forth battle the first half, with Sebastian De La Cruz scoring the first touchdown for the Lions with 8:25 left in the first to put Ozona up 7-6.

Sonora would answer back with a Brock Aschenbeck pass reception. The two-point conversion was good by Evan Shannon making it 14-7 Sonora at the end of the first quarter.

In the second, Zachary Talamantez found his stride for the Lions on a 13-yard pass reception from Quarterback Alec Lara.

With 2:46 left in the first half, Orlando Garza would nail a 40-yard field goal and give the Lions a 16-14 lead at halftime.
