Serving with heart is what Jerrel Fielder does as a NOMAD. Fielder, his wife Linda, and several other NOMADS have been serving and working the past two weeks at the Ozona United Methodist Church. “It’s a God thing,” Fielder
said. These workers have come from Arkansas, Michigan and Illinois to help fix, repair and remodel the church building.

CCCCSD School Board meeting tonight

The Crockett County CCSD School Board will hold their regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. tonight (March 19) in the Administration Office Board Room at 797 Avenue D. Lady Lions win state medals

Nicole Higgins brought home the gold last week in state powerlifting. Higgins, a senior at OHS, placed first in the 148-pound class at the meet in Corpus Christi. She had 400 in squat, 145 in bench press and 315 in dead lift for a total of 860 pounds. Sophomore Ashley Vargas placed fifth in the 165-pound class with a 310 in squat, 135 in bench press and 290 in dead lift for a total of 735

Fewer women farmers in U.S., but more in Texas

The number of women farmers in Texas is increasing, bucking the national trend, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Census of Agriculture. The number of female principal farm operators in Texas increased 10 percent
between 2007 and 2012, while the number of female principal operators across the country declined, according to the data released last week.

Voter turnout low in primary elections

Only 968 Crockett County Voters cast ballots in the March 4 Primary Election. Crockett County has 2,515 registered voters making turnout around 38 percent. This year's turnout is lower than the 2010 primary, which was 42 percent. Turnout in both parties in the marquee race for governor fell from 2010 to 2014, though the drop-off was more pronounced in the Democratic contest.

Medley appointed tax assessor-collector

Crockett County has a new leader in the tax office. At Monday’s regular meeting, the commissioners approved the resignation of Rhonda Shaw and appointed Michelle Martinez Medley as the new county tax assessorcollector.
Shaw will remain as chief appraiser for Crockett and Reagan counties until someone becomes certified for the positions in the next two to three years. Shaw has worked for the tax office since 1981
