OHS Band earns Division I rating

THE OHS BAND earned a Division I in Sight-Reading and a Division II in Concert Contest last week in Midland. The band received an escort into town by the Ozona Volunteer Fire Department. The OHS Band is under the direction of Chans Moellendorf and assistant Gary DelVecchio

School Board members disagree on calendar, holiday

The CCCCSD calendar for 2014-2015 was adopted during last week’s meeting, but the board may not be finished addressing the issue of recognizing a holiday. At the March 19 regular meeting, school board members discussed having Martin Luther King Jr. Day off. Board member Grizz Medina and Orlando DeHoyos both voted against the calendar that was recommended by the members of the District Site-Base Committee, which does not
have MLK Day off

The OHS Academic Team competed in the district meet Saturday at Mertzon. The following students will advance to the regional meet to be held May 1-3 in Levelland: Vivian Medina, Desiree Marshall, Jadie Marshall, Lorenzo

said. These workers have come from Arkansas, Michigan and Illinois to help fix, repair and remodel the church building.

Lady Lions win state medals

Nicole Higgins brought home the gold last week in state powerlifting. Higgins, a senior at OHS, placed first in the 148-pound class at the meet in Corpus Christi. She had 400 in squat, 145 in bench press and 315 in dead lift for a total of 860 pounds. Sophomore Ashley Vargas placed fifth in the 165-pound class with a 310 in squat, 135 in bench press and 290 in dead lift for a total of 735

Fewer women farmers in U.S., but more in Texas

The number of women farmers in Texas is increasing, bucking the national trend, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Census of Agriculture. The number of female principal farm operators in Texas increased 10 percent
between 2007 and 2012, while the number of female principal operators across the country declined, according to the data released last week.

Voter turnout low in primary elections

Only 968 Crockett County Voters cast ballots in the March 4 Primary Election. Crockett County has 2,515 registered voters making turnout around 38 percent. This year's turnout is lower than the 2010 primary, which was 42 percent. Turnout in both parties in the marquee race for governor fell from 2010 to 2014, though the drop-off was more pronounced in the Democratic contest.
