Voter turnout low in primary elections

Only 968 Crockett County Voters cast ballots in the March 4 Primary Election. Crockett County has 2,515 registered voters making turnout around 38 percent. This year's turnout is lower than the 2010 primary, which was 42 percent. Turnout in both parties in the marquee race for governor fell from 2010 to 2014, though the drop-off was more pronounced in the Democratic contest.

Medley appointed tax assessor-collector

Crockett County has a new leader in the tax office. At Monday’s regular meeting, the commissioners approved the resignation of Rhonda Shaw and appointed Michelle Martinez Medley as the new county tax assessorcollector.
Shaw will remain as chief appraiser for Crockett and Reagan counties until someone becomes certified for the positions in the next two to three years. Shaw has worked for the tax office since 1981

Deaton, Preddy win county races

Crockett County Judge Fred Deaton easily won his third term during Tuesday night's Primary Election. Deaton had 694 votes to opponent Larry Williams' 198 in the Democratic Primary. Williams congratulated Deaton at the courthouse annex Tuesday night. This is third time Williams has run against Deaton for the county judge position.

Water availability a risk for oil, gas drillers

A new national report on hydraulic fracturing and water use suggests that oil and gas companies are at risk of running short on the precious resource — especially in South Texas, where the drilling boom took off just two years ago as a severe drought was taking hold and has not let up. "Water use for hydraulic fracturing will continue to grow, triggering unprecedented county water demands," the report warns. Continued drought conditions and a population surge in areas where drilling is most prevalent are also key factors.

School Board approves administrator contracts

Crockett County CCSD School Board members extended administrator contracts during the Feb. 19 regular meeting. After a two and a half hour executive/closed session the board approved contract extensions for OHS Principal Ronny Clayton, OMS Principal Tammy McWilliams, OES Principal Janina Savala, OES Assistant Principal Vicky Munoz, Director of Special and Federal Programs Cheryl Bricken, Athletic Director Edward Perez,
Curriculum and District Testing Coordinator Tonya Poindexter and Technology Director Keith Harmsen.

Early voting ends Friday, Election Day Tuesday

Early voting in the March 4 Primary Election ends Friday, Feb. 28. Voterscan cast their ballots from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., including the lunch hour. As of press time Monday ___ ballots had been cast in the Democratic Primary and __ in
the Republican Primary. For the Primary Election voters will have to decide whether to vote in the Democrat or the Republican primary.
