School board hears breakdown of state ratings

A breakdown of Crockett County CCSD’s state accountability ratings was given at the Sept. 18 regular school board meeting.

Ozona High School Principal Tamara McWilliams gave a report that showed where the district failed to meet standards in some areas, and the district’s improvement plan.

The district as a whole received an overall rating of “D” in the A-F rating system.

The ratings are determined by student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps, which tells how well different populations of students in the district are performing. The breakdown is by race/ethnicity, special education, continuously enrolled and mobile students, English Language Learners and economically disadvantaged.

McWilliams said the elementary and the middle school have 14 indicators they have to meet for closing the gaps, which is based on the STAAR test scores.

Holding Harper to only 38 total yards of offense, the Ozona Lions rolled to a 68-0 victory during Friday’s homecoming game at Lion Stadium.

This was the Lions third consecutive shutout win.

“It feels amazing, especially as a senior. I know every one of these underclassmen are working toward getting more shutouts. It was awesome,” said Senior Jacob Childress.

Ozona forced two turnovers that led to points on the board.

“The defense did another great job and smothered Harper all night long,” said Athletic Director and Head Coach Kyle Freeman.

Sophomore Carlos Cantu led the team with eight tackles. He also caused and recovered a Harper fumble.

Executive orders address deadly mass shootings

Article Image Alt Text

STATE CAPITAL HIGHLIGHTS

AUSTIN — Gov. Greg Abbott on Sept. 5 issued eight executive orders in hopes of preventing further mass shootings.

Abbott’s orders came days after seven people were killed and 25 injured in multiple shootings by a lone gunman along thoroughfares connecting the cities of Odessa and Midland on Aug. 31. The suspect fired at law enforcement officers and civilians, including while driving a hijacked postal van between the two cities. Law enforcement officers brought the rampage to a halt in an exchange of gunfire resulting in the death of the suspect when the van he was driving had come to a stop after ramming a police vehicle. The suspect, a 36-year-old white male armed with an assault rifle, was identified as Seth Aaron Ator of Odessa.
