From the National Weather Service in San Angelo: 

Strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible late this afternoon and tonight, across the area along and north of Throckmorton to Sterling City line. The main severe weather hazards are large hail and damaging winds, along with deadly lightning. 

Temperatures will be seasonably warm today, and mild tonight, across west-central Texas. High for Ozona is expected to be 78 with a low of 62.

District Champs

The OHS Lady Lions won the District 4-2A Championship Friday night with a 14-6 victory over McCamey.

“This team is a special bunch. They’ve learned to play hard with, and for each other, and that’s what won this game,” said Coach Joe Moore. “I say it week in and week out, I’m so proud of this bunch. They are special and we are going to continue to work hard to see how far this thing goes.”

Good Friday closings, Easter events

The Ozona Stockman will be closed for Good Friday, April

19. Deadline is noon Monday, April 22, for the April 24 edition. Also closed for Good Friday are Ozona Schools, Ozona Community Center, Ozona Head Start, Crockett County Water Control and Improvement District #1, Crockett County offices, Crockett County Senior Center, Crockett County Civic Center, Crockett County Extension Office, the Crockett County Public Library and the Crockett County Museum. Some county offices, extension office and the library will close at noon Thursday, April 18. The J. Cleo Thompson Wellness Center will be closed Friday, April 19, and Saturday, April 20, for the holiday. Ozona Bank will close at noon Friday, April 19. Crockett National Bank will have regular hours Friday. The Family Health Center of Ozona and the U.S. Post Office will be open Friday. Lowe's Grocery Store will be closed Easter Sunday, April 21.

Local man killed in one-vehicle accident

A local man was killed Monday morning in a one-vehicle accident northeast of Eldorado. Moises Galindo, 35, of Ozona, was pronounced dead at the scene by Schleicher County Judge Phil Edmiston. Galindo, driving a 2004 Nissan Titan, was traveling west on Farm-to-Market Road 1828 when his vehicle left the roadway causing him to overcorrect and the vehicle to roll, according to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety. Galindo was ejected from the vehicle, the report stated. The accident occurred around 14 miles northeast of Eldorado. Galindo was not wearing seat belt. Accident was investigated by DPS Trooper Liliana Camarillo, of DPS San Angelo, and assisted by Troopers Robert Newman and Joseph Brechtel, also of San Angelo.

State Bound

For the third consecutive year, the Ozona High School Computer Science Team is state bound after winning the UIL Region I-2A Academic Meet Saturday in Odessa.

The four-man team of Chantz Elliott, Manuel Torralba, Humberto Torralba and Josh Knaack brought home first place honors in the event.

Manuel was first as an individual, Chantz second, Humberto third and Josh sixth

The foursome also won the Calculator competition as a team, qualifying them for state in that event.

Once again, Manuel was first as an individual, Chantz second, Humberto seventh and Josh 17th.

Stockman wins awards at South Texas Press

The Ozona Stockman won several awards in the South Texas Press Association’s 2019 Better Newspaper Contest. 
Editor and Publisher Melissa Perner won second place in Serious Column Writing for her columns “I believe in newspapers” and “Community newspapers are needed more than ever.”
Perner also won third place in Editorial Writing for editorials dealing with last summer’s newsprint tariff issue. 
In the Sports Photo category, Perner and Advertising Director Susan Calloway both earned second place awards.
Perner’s entry was from the rainy football game this past fall between the Ozona Lions and the Iraan Braves. 
Calloway’s entry was a great catch made by Zachary Talmantez during an Ozona Lion Baseball Game last spring. 
The contest was based on entries from 2018. 
Perner and her family received the awards at the 93rd annual South Texas Press Association Convention last week in La Grange, Texas.

Regional Bound: OHS Golf second at district

The OHS Lions Golf Team is headed to the regional meet after finishing second at the District 7-2A Meet Monday in San Angelo.

The two-round meet took place on March 25 and Monday at Bentwood Country Club and Quicksand Golf Courses.

Senior Riley Williams was the district champion for the boys shooting 92 the first round and 82 in Monday’s second round for a total of 174.

The Lions (Williams, Donovan Hunt, Carson Childress, Justin Baker and Adam Hopper) had a team total of 449 in the first round and 399 in the second round for 848 total.

Winters won the tournament with a total score of

Faster than a Blizzard

CHRISTOVAL – The OHS Varsity Lions Track Team won their third consecutive district championship Thursday night at the District 7-2A Meet.

The Lions were headed into Thursday’s final running events in fourth place, 42 points behind first place Winters. Miles was in second and Eldorado was in third.

On Thursday, the Lions made a comeback by scoring 108 points to finish in first, ahead of Winters who finished with 123 points.

“A comeback despite headwinds and an obstacle course placed in the kids’ path. A testimony to heart,” said Coach Kyle Freeman.

Sebastian De La Cruz medaled in four events, including winning the 100-meters, and helping to lead the 1600-meter relay to a second-place finish with teammates Zachary Talamantez, Humberto Torralba and Manuel Torralba.

OMS STAAR Testing Schedule this week

Dear Parents, just a reminder that the 7th Grade writing STAAR and 8th Grade math STAAR is Tuesday. 8th Grade reading STAAR is Wednesday.

Students report to the cafeteria for 1st period. (No athletics)

6th Grade will have normal lunch time (11:35)
7th & 8th Grade lunch is at 12:00.

Please make sure your child gets a good night’s rest the night before and has a healthy breakfast that morning.
