Laredo man killed in truck crash

A 31 year-old Laredo man was killed when two truck tractor-trailers collided and caught fire late one foggy night last week.

Preliminary investigation show that at around 11:43 p.m. on Jan. 15, a 2000 International Truck Tractor and towed trailer, driven by Flavio Zapata, began to make a left turn onto U.S. Highway 190, at the U.S. Highway 190 and State Highway 137 intersection, and disregarded the stop sign while doing so, according to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Kyle Patrick Wartenbee, 37, of Gulfport, Miss. was driving a 2007 Peterbilt Truck Tractor and towed trailer that was traveling east on U.S. Highway 190 and saw Zapata’s vehicle enter the same highway.

State Rep. Murr files bill that would end ‘Robin Hood’ plan, reform property taxes

State Rep. Andrew Murr, R-Junction, has once again filed a bill to try to reform school finance and eliminate the “Robin Hood” recapture plan.

Murr has filed House Bill 297, which would fully eliminate the maintenance and operations (M&O) taxes that are used to pay for schools and that also account for nearly half of all property bills, according to a release from Murr’s office.

In the place of M&O taxes, Murr’s bill would incorporate a state sales tax increase to raise an equivalent amount of revenue, the release stated.

West Texas Rehabilitation 2019 Telethon & Auction Saturday

ABILENE, TX - This year’s 49th edition of the West Texas Rehabilitation Center’s telethon and auction promises to be one of the best yet featuring favorite guests along with two great entertainers, Country Music Hall of Famer, Ricky Skaggs and Nashville’s newest trio, Runaway June.

The online auction will be one of the largest in the history of telethon.

This year’s telethon takes place Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Abilene Convention Center from 7 p.m.-midnight.

CCCCSD Guardian Plan Policy approved

The Crockett County CCSD School Board approved the first of two policies in adopting the Guardian Plan during a special called meeting on Jan. 9.

Board members approved changes to the district’s Safety Program/Risk Management Emergency Plans (CKC Local).

Revisions to the policy state that the board may authorize specific district employees to possess certain firearms at school and at school-sponsored, or school-related, events.

January is School Board Recognition Month

January is School Board Recognition Month, and Crockett County Consolidated Common School District will join the Texas Association of School Boards and other districts across the state to honor the countless contributions of these locally elected advocates for Texas schoolchildren and public schools.

“School board members tackle a difficult job and shoulder enormous responsibilities. These men and women are elected to establish the policies that provide the framework for our public schools. They provide vision and leadership in their roles as advocates, and they will continue to stand up for public education and guard against anything that takes away from our children or undermines our public schools,” said Raul Chavarria, Crockett County Consolidated Common School District Superintendent.

Public gets first look at new jail

In 1892, Crockett County opened its first jail.

More than 100 years later, the county opened its second jail.

Last week, the public was invited to tour the new Crockett County Jail located at 121 South State Highway 163.

The 24-bed facility will house local prisoners, as well as the sheriff’s office.

Hurd bill supporting libraries becomes law

The Museum and Library Services Act (S. 3530), a bipartisan initiative to ensure the continued success of our libraries and museums across the nation originally introduced by Senator Reed, DRhode Island. U.S. Rep. Will Hurd, R-Heletos, joined representatives Raúl Grijalva, D-Arizona, Leonard Lance, R-New Jersey, and David McKinley, R-West Virginia.

The bill was signed into law on Dec. 31, 2018 by President Donald Trump.

“Our public libraries, especially in rural areas, go far beyond simply providing books. They serve as the primary provider of literacy programming, technology training and job seeking assistance in many communities I represent across South and West Texas,” said Hurd, who represents more than 100 public libraries, college libraries and school districts in the 23rd District of Texas. “The grant funding authorized through this bill directly serves libraries across our state and is WILL HURD
