Library goes wild

Article Image Alt Text

On Tuesday, the Crockett County Public Library hosted a “Wild Things Zoofari,” as another part of the ongoing annual summer reading program.

Courtney Pineda performed the show with four wild animals to display and interact with the audience. Such as: A ring tailed lemur, a genet, a gecko, a three-banded armadillo and a chocolate skunk.

While presenting each animal, Courtney was able to explain the habitat, diet, and everyday lifestyle choices that come along in the lifetime of said animal. Within the show volunteers were able to take part in a staring contest with a gecko, count an armadillo’s shell rings, and even pet a lemur.

Wild Things Zoofari has been committed to informing and raising awareness to animal conservation with each show. Courtney is a specialist in Animal Education and preforms over 400 animal shows in libraries and schools around the state of Texas per year.

2019 State Legislative Session: bills that passed, failed

Texas’ top political leaders wrapped the 2019 session of the Texas Legislature on Memorial Day with an air of accomplishment.

They passed two major pieces of legislation that they had been working toward for years — a finance boost and a bill aimed at slowing the growth of property taxes.

But there were some key failures too, most notably a sales tax increase that would have allowed lawmakers to lower property taxes even more. That measure died due to lack of support. Many others died due to lack of time or a clever procedural trick by an opponent.

Here are the steps of the legislative process that were tracked by the Texas Tribune.

Commissioners, school board approve sale of bonds

The Crockett County Commissioners’ Court and the Crockett County CCSD School Board approved the sale of bonds for the Crockett County CCSD that will allow the district to pay off a bond and add more to their 2018-2019 budget.

During Monday’s regular meeting, and a special school board meeting also held Monday, both boards approved the sale of the bonds that will move funding from the district’s Qualified School Construction Bond loan from the maintenance and operation budget to the interest and sinking budget in order to pay off the loan faster, and not subject the loan payment to recapture under the Robin Hood plan.

By doing this, the district will be able to add $231,000 to their maintenance and operations budget. This was approved by Crockett County Voters in November 2018.
