Congressman Pete Gallego’s Resolutions for 2014

A New Year. Those same resolutions we made last year and didn't keep come back with a vengeance. That's usually how it goes. This year, while I'm a year older, I also feel a year wiser. In truth, some of my resolutions this year actually are the same or similar to last year's. For example, last year, I was about to start my first year in Congress.

Civility: Let’s try that free speech option in 2014 in public life

T he First Amendment protects our freedom to say and write just about anything we want — but that doesn’t mean we ought to, particularly in public life. The difference rests between “can” and “should.” Our nation’s founders
were no strangers to rude, callous and raucous debate in public life and to vicious commentary, even by today’s “anything goes” online standards.

Fearless ag predictions for 2014

The clock’s ticking on 2013 and you can argue that’s it’s been a fairly good year for Texas agriculture and Texas Farm Bureau. Sure we could use some more rain. This drought is far from over, but parts of Texas are soggy right now. Proposition 6 passed, through the support of agriculture and Farm Bureau, and we’re stepping right along in meeting Texas’ water needs for the next 50 years. And organization- wise, Texas Farm Bureau achieved a half
million families in membership.

My first year as your voice in Congress

As my first year as a U.S. Congressman ends, I want to share my impressions of my job, the Congress, and some of the challenges our nation faces. I remain convinced that,  despite the current gridlock, reasonable people -
Democrats and Republicans - can come together to solve our most pressing problems.

A mother's letter to Santa

Dear Santa, I've been a good mom all year. I've fed, cleaned and cuddled my children on demand, visited the doctor's office more than my doctor, sold 62 cases of candy bars to  raise money to plant a shade tree on theschool  playground.

Print, review, analyze financial reports monthly

It seemed like a good idea at the time…starting your own business that is. After all, how hard could it be? All I have to do is buy or make something and sell it to someone who wants or needs it. Simple. All you had to do was establish a legal business structure, set up an account with the State Comptroller’s office, find a business location, and obtain some financing.
