Ownership of groundwater an issue, challenge

In 1904, the Texas Supreme Court ruled that landowners could pump all of the groundwater they want from under their land without being held liable to others for drainage. This ruling confirmed the “rule of capture” and established that landowners have an ownership interest in the groundwater beneath their land.

What will keep unfounded Ebola reports from ‘going viral?’

So how scared should we be about the worldwide Ebola virus crisis? For nearly all of us, the answer  to that question will come through what we see, hear and read in the news media  and in the U.S. that places a unique burden on those free to print, broadcast or post stories as they wish about efforts to control the spread of the virus.

Time to make a commitment in your business

Oct. 1 began a new program year for the ASU Small Business Development Center since we operate on a federal term. For us it is a time of recommitment to those we serve, the small business owner. As a team we will get together
and revisit our values of integrity, excellence, service, and innovation to make sure our team  is still aligned with these important values, which are the guiding lights for us.

Vote for school bond

Early voting for the Nov. 4 General  Election starts this week.  As Crockett County voters go to the polls, we ask that you vote in favor of the $3 million Crockett County Consolidated Common School District Bond.This bond will fix a lot of areas in school district, including the purchase of new buses, technology for  computer and science labs, resurface the track and new tennis courts

State inspectors find Crockett County Jail outdated

The sheriff had a visit from the state jail inspector and his trainee and thinks he came really close to having our jail shut down completely.  However, when he told the inspector that the county commissioners had recognized the severity of our problem and had budgeted money in next year's budget for an architect to draw the plans for a new jail the inspector was encouraged.

5 public health threats scarier than Ebola

There’s no doubt about it: Ebola is scary. The disease has a high mortality rate and no known cure. No vaccine is available to halt its spread. But the threat of Ebola spreading in the U.S. is nominal. Highly advanced disease surveillance systems, well-developed quarantine and isolation laws, adequate hygiene and sanitation, and top-notch medical services will keep the U.S. from facing a crisis similar to the one sweeping through West Africa

Road Rage

The clean-cut boys and girls in their blue and gold FFA jackets make me so proud to be a former member. That was certainly the case when I saw on the front page of my weekly copy of the Voice News of Hickman, Nebraska, FFA members from the Freeman Chapter harvesting over 1,000 pounds of tomatoes, peppers, sweet corn, beans, cantaloupe, cucumbers and zucchini that they gave to needy area residents and food pantries

Newspapers bind communities together

What do you care most about in life? Most of us would put family at, or near, the top of such a list. Friends would be there. So would our jobs or businesses, our livelihoods. Our homes. Maybe our pets. Our hobbies and pastimes.
Add in those around us: Neighbors, the community, etc.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Sept. 16 – or 16 de septiembre – is Mexico’s Independence Day. Here at home, it is the official kickoff to Hispanic Heritage Month.  Whatever our background and culture, we should embrace and appreciate it. My own cultural heritage is Hispanic, though I often get asked whether I’m Italian or Portuguese.
