Further instruction offered for CHL holders

This morning, when I asked the sheriff what was on his mind, he said he had been giving a lot of thought to concealed handgun license classes. A class was given in Ozona a few weeks ago, and there were 41 participants.
He is all for people protecting themselves, their families and property.

Don’t Be An Heir Head

I don’t know if anyone under the age of 40 reads this column because it’s over 12 words in length and I actually spell out words instead of using texting shortcuts. If, in the small chance any younger persons are reading this, I have 10 little words for you that could make you millions of dollars without working. Now do I have your attention?

May is Military Appreciation Month, thank you to those who serve

May is Military Appreciation Month – a time to reflect on the sacrifice and commitment to public service made by those in uniform. I’ve taught my son to say "thanks for your service and sacrifice" whenever he sees an individual in a military uniform. This support is deserved - and it reflects the incredible  debt of gratitude we owe Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines.

Death, neglect, broken promises at the VA

Today in America veterans are dying — not at the hands of a foreign enemy but through the neglect of the very country they served. Many of them put themselves in harm’s way in foreign lands so we can live peaceful lives back
home. They did so secure in the promise that America takes care of her veterans

Don't feed the neighborhood or the wild animals

With the retirement of Chief Deputy Emilio Tambunga, the sheriff appointed Jose L. Gutierrez as the new chief deputy. Jose is home-grown, but went off to ASU to school and went to work for the San Angelo Police Department in 1990. He came back and worked for Crockett County Sheriff’s Department from 2000 to 2007

For Mom

Mom. Just saying the word makes me want to pick up the phone and give her a call. A habit I do often frequently. Whenever I have problem, I often reach for the phone and immediately call mom. “God could not be everywhere
and therefore  He made mothers," according to a Jewish Proverb

School Library Month - a time to instill the value of reading

April is School Library Month. Even as a kid, I loved reading books. My passion for reading wouldn’t have come about if I hadn’t had access to good quality books while growing up in Alpine.

When breaking news was fragile

The lesson, hammered by countless journalism teachers for century(s), was intended to be cattle- branded into minds of aspiring writers who would go forth to inform readers about what’s going on in the world. And it was
emphasized that “getting it right” was preferable to “getting it first"

Practical People

By Lee Pitts.

I’ll admit it was a puppy love because I wasn’t even ten years old when I first spotted her. But just like young kids sometimes fall in love with their teacher, I fell head over heals in love with her looks. Later, as I really got to know her, I came to love everything about her. I’m talking about Wyoming, of course. Why Wyoming? First, there is the debt of gratitude I owe Rock Springs, Wyoming, for saving my life once. We were flying in a small plane on our way to Cheyenne and we never should have even been in the air in the first place.
