Everyone needs to be cautious on roads

This week, the sheriff was concerned about the increased traffic situation and the bad accidents that have been occurring in and around our county.  Since he has experience with big trucks, he was able to shed some light on how difficult it can be for an 18-wheeler to avoid a bad situation.

Texas seen as 'electoral wasteland'

Voter turnout in Texas is indisputably awful. The March primaries drew 1.9 million, with only 560,033  voting in the Democratic contest and the rest voting in the more competitive Republican races. According to the Texas secretary of state’s office, there were 18.9 million adults in the state in March, and 13.6 million of them were registered to vote

Bottom line: hold the VA accountable, veterans matter

As a kid, I remember the phrase "It takes an act of Congress" being used to describe anything that took a long time or was extremely difficult. As an adult and a member of Congress, I learned firsthand what that means. Yet, just before Memorial Day, I voted for a bill in the U.S. House of Representatives that would make it easier to terminate employees at the Department of Veterans Affairs. It passed 390 to 33. It was remarkably fast action in a body known to go slower than most snails.

Thanks Dad

The first time my vehicle truck broke down when I was at college, the first person I called was my dad. When my feelings got  hurt, it was always my dad that I turned to for a big hug to make me feel better. Dad was always that
one that I turned to when I needed help, advice or when it came time to watch a football game

Called to serve

I will never know if the student was serious or simply smile-seeking when he scheduled a visit to my office a quarter-century ago. It was early in my Howard Payne University presidency. The student, whose name I don’t recall, presented a gift. It was a colorful poster showing a beautiful mansion, luxury sedan, sports car, decked-out boat and huge motor home.

Graduates, be safe and smart behind the wheel

When I asked the sheriff what was on his mind this week, he said graduation. He is very proud of all our graduates and wants so sincerely to wish them well. They have accomplished a lot and are at a great position in their lives to really flourish. He is hoping that they will take seriously their own futures and consider consequences of their actions, celebratory or otherwise.

May is Older Americans Month, honor their accomplishments

The efforts of older Americans built the foundation of our future and our country's future. As a young child growing up in Alpine, my grandmother lived with us. My parents taught me that she and others of her generation had worked much and sacrificed much to move our family into the middle class

To the Class of 2014, the world awaits

Another school year has come and gone. As the Class of 2014 prepares for graduation, I want to offer some advice from someone who was in their shoes when this class was being born.

Further instruction offered for CHL holders

This morning, when I asked the sheriff what was on his mind, he said he had been giving a lot of thought to concealed handgun license classes. A class was given in Ozona a few weeks ago, and there were 41 participants.
He is all for people protecting themselves, their families and property.

Don’t Be An Heir Head

I don’t know if anyone under the age of 40 reads this column because it’s over 12 words in length and I actually spell out words instead of using texting shortcuts. If, in the small chance any younger persons are reading this, I have 10 little words for you that could make you millions of dollars without working. Now do I have your attention?
