Church welcomes new preacher

by Elie Cassaro

Ozona—The Ozona Methodist Church recently welcomed a new preacher, Larry Bass, from Canyon, TX.

Bass has been a preacher in the Methodist church for over 20 years and has traveled around the panhandle spreading the word of God.

Bass said that so far, he has enjoyed the small town of Ozona and appreciates the warm welcome he received from the members of the church.

Bass earned his ministry degree from Lubbock Christian University and then attended Duke Divinity School to further his education.

Before college, Bass went through a few different religions before finding his purpose in the Methodist Church. Bass said he never planned on being a preacher and wasn't very religious until he was around 30 years old.

“It was always in my head that I'd either be an actor or get married,” Bass said.

Bass entered the military and served in the Air Force for almost 10 years. He and his wife have been married for 35 years.

Bass said his wife played a large part in bringing him to Christ. Bass and his wife have two children, Sarah and Jacob.

Bass feels the biggest challenges in his career are the people he encounters. Bass once heard a preacher compare running a church to “herding cats” and soon came to understand that comparison.

Bass said the people he encounters are the best part of his vocation. He feels there is a “big movement of God” occurring in Ozona.

Bass said the Men's Sunday school program is different for him. The program has 20 to 25 members meeting every week, including some who do not attend the Methodist church.

“I think God is really doing something here. It's very exciting and very fun to be a part of this,” Bass said.

Larry Bass and the Methodist Church of Ozona encourage the community to come by and experience the church.
