1933

A quota of 73 cutter cows has been assigned to Crockett County to make up the necessary total in the government beef canning program for the relief of the unemployed and to stabilize beef cattle prices, local authorities have been advised. The government is buying the cows at prevailing market prices and the purchases are being made over the livestock-producing area in accordance with the livestock census. A minimum of $1.75 per cwt. is to be paid for the animals.

1963

The downtown area has put on a new Christmas dress, thanks to a successful financial drive by a committee from the Chamber of Commerce headed by Bill Watson of Watson’s Department Store. More than $2,000 was raised among merchants to buy a set of colorful lighted Christmas decorations which volunteer workers have been installing all week in preparation for the Friday night illumination. 

1973

A car baler is located at the dump grounds south of town. The peculiar-looking contraption can take a full-grown car and smash it into a block two or three feet wide and deep in a matter of minutes. In the picture the fork lifter at left is removing from the machine a chunk of car. The machine has been here about a month. The operators will pick up any abandoned autos you might have around. Next week it will move to the other dump ground and set up.

1993

The sixth annual Crockett County DeerFest fed 1,011 people through the serving line, packing the main room of the civic center and filling all available space in other rooms with diners Friday night. At one time, the line was reported to have stretched to the Lutheran Church, but the serving was fast, and one hour and 10 minutes after the 6:20 p.m. opening, everyone had gone through the line. Robert Roden of Bayou Vista was the big winner of the evening, taking home the Honda 4x4 and also winning a gun. In addition to a large variety of prizes, 82 guns were given away at the 1993 DeerFest. An estimated 50 to 75 cooks prepared 65 deer, eight feral hogs, 17 briskets, 70 pounds of beans, 70 pounds of potatoes and 50 boxes of vermicelli. Also on the menu was 100 pounds of pen-raised alligator.
