After months of dogs being dumped along an empty stretch of West Texas highway, officials have made an arrest.

People began matching photos of the dogs shared in coverage by the Standard-Times and USA TODAY Network-Texas sites with animals housed at the Atascosa County Animal Control shelter and alerted officials, according to a news release from Cow Dog Rescue, which has saved many of the dumped dogs from the roadside.

Using that information, officials set up surveillance at the Atascosa County Animal Control shelter in Jourdanton on the evening of Sunday, Sept. 29, 2019 and observed a gray Dodge minivan load dogs into the cargo area of the vehicle, according to an arrest affidavit.

The van left the shelter at 6:08 p.m. and the vehicle was followed for roughly 150 miles into Kimble County, where dogs have been dumped monthly since July.

The van exited Interstate 10 onto Farm to Market Road 3130, where a Texas Game Warden in Sutton County began surveillance about 8:55 p.m.
