The scoreboard told one story, but the players on the field told another Friday night as the Ozona Lions lost to #10 Crane, 50-39. Despite the loss, the Lions never quit giving Crane a tough game and preparing the Lions for upcoming district play. “It was a very close game, as we expected. The game hinged on four key plays on the night. The turnover ratio fell in their favor, and when two evenly matched teams face off that is a big deal,” said Athletic Director and Head Coach Kyle Freeman. “The offense had a good night overall.” The Lions rushed for 240 yards on the ground with Abraham Rodriguez leading the charge with 132 yards and one touchdown. Alec Lara threw for 164 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for an additional 39 yards. Zachary Talamantez had three catches for 57 yards and rushed for 21 yards and a touchdown. Jaden Fay had two catches for 31 yards and a touchdown. Joe Perez had three catches for 65 yards and a touchdown. Lane Smith made a 30-yard field goal and was perfect on extra-point kicks. Lazaro Rodriguez also had a touchdown and led the team on defense with 12 tackles. Smith had nine tackles. Talamantez and Carlos Cantu had seven each. Aiden Fuentes had six tackles and Jacob Childress and Emmanuel Venegas each had five. Venegas also had a sack. The Lions had 444 total yards on the night. “ In close games like that, you have to convert on key downs and get key stops on big downs as well. It was a good game and could have swung either way,” Freeman said. “We came away from this pre-district matchup a better ball club. We look forward to starting district play this week against Stamford.”
