Jean Read was born December 30, 1931 in Victoria, Texas to Nina Mae Glass Coats and Joe J. Coats. She completed her life on this earth on October 18, 2018 in the Crockett County Care Center. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 30, at the Ozona United Methodist Church. Arrangements by Kerbow Funeral Home. After her birth father’s death, her mother married Clifford F. Powers, of Sinton, Texas, and Jean’s early years were spent in the West Sinton area where she attended Adams School, a small rural school in which the first three grades shared a room (and consequently, each other’s lessons). She always credited this repetitious foundation for her success in school. She graduated from Sinton High School and Baylor University. She began teaching in Premont, Texas and after three years moved to Ozona where she taught nine years. She was married to Nat Read in 1965 and they resided at the family ranch for the rest of her life. Some of her happiest years were spent at the ranch and in the trips she and Nat made in their single-engined airplane throughout the nine years. Her ex-students and their families were a source of great pleasure to Jean and she enjoyed entertaining at the ranch. She loved a good story and enjoyed a good storyteller. She is preceded in death by her mother, father, and stepfather; husband, Nat; one brother, Forest Powers, of Beeville, Texas and brother-in-law, Jim Read, of Ozona. Jean is survived by her sister, Dora McBride, of Portland, Texas; brother, Don Powers and his wife, Donna, of Portland, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was a member of the Ozona Woman’s League, the Ozona United Methodist Church, various agricultural organizations and had served on numerous civic committees. Honorary pallbearers will be her ex-students and the members of the Taylor Box Study Club. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Crockett County Public Library or the Crockett County Historical Commission.
