Commissioners' table treasurer decision, interview another candidate

The Crockett County Commissioners’ Court still hasn’t decided on a new county treasurer.

During a special meeting Thursday (May 10) night, the commissioners interviewed one more candidate.

County Judge Fred Deaton said two people turned in applications that day (May 10). He said both were qualified but turned in their applications after the deadline. The two applicants were Roylan Sullivan and Laura Conner.

Deaton told the new applicants that it was up to the commissioners if they wanted to consider their applications.

“The one thing that the commissioners’ court is pressed with is picking the best applicant,” Deaton said.

“Our job is to pick the most qualified person. We could appoint anybody at any time,” added Commissioner Wesley Bean.

Deadline for applications was April 25. On April 28 the commissioners interviewed all six candidates that turned in applications by the April 25 deadline. The commissioners tabled a decision during the April 28 meeting to the Thursday (May 10) so County Attorney Jody Upham could check the qualifications of each candidate.

Candidates that were interviewed on April 28, and turned in applications prior to the April 25 deadline, are Amy Cowley, Annette DeHoyos, Elsa Fierro, Cynthia Hokit, Molly Martin and Pete Morado.

Cowley, DeHoyos and Hokit attended Thursday’s meeting.

“We received their applications after we advertised it two weeks in the paper. I don’t think we should accept them,” said Commissioner Frank Tambunga.

Commissioner Eligio Martinez said he agreed with Tambunga.

The commissioners then met in closed session from 5:51-6:37 p.m.

When they returned in open session, Deaton said the commissioners had decided to interview Conner tonight. Conner immediately showed up dressed for her interview.

The commissioners then met in closed session from 6:39-7:25 p.m. where they conducted the interview with Conner and then had more discussion.

When the commissioners opened the meeting, no action was taken.

Thursday's agenda only listed Discussion and Action on Appointment of Treasurer along with Executive/Closed Session - TX Government Code 551.074 for Discussion and action on Personnel Matters. The agenda did not state anything about conducting interviews.

The item is on the agenda for Monday’s (May 14) regular commissioners’ court meeting which starts at 9 a.m. at the courthouse annex. It states Discussion and action on appointment of Treasurer as well as Executive/Closed Session - TX Government Code 551.074 for Discussion and action on Personnel Matters. It is open to the public.

The commissioners are looking to appoint someone until the end of year. This is to finish out the term of Karen Webb, who died of a sudden illness in March.
