Sam Stephen Perner, Jr., 86, of Ozona, Texas passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 25, 2017. Sam was born Sept. 22, 1930 on a ranch in Reagan County, Texas to Stephen Perner and Marie Doty Perner. He was the oldest of three children; Chris Perner and June Perner Sloan. He graduated from Ozona High School and attended Sul Ross State University. He was drafted into the US Army in 1951 and served two years in the Military Police. While attending Sul Ross, he met his wife of 66 years, Polly Hardin; they were married in July of 1951. Sam was a lifetime rancher. He enjoyed raising, showing, and racing Quarter Horses. He also raised Rambouillet sheep, Hereford cattle, and Angora goats for many years. Sam loved the outdoors and spent much of his time hunting and fishing. He was very active in the Ozona community as a lifelong member of the Ozona United Methodist Church and a member of the Crockett County School Board for several terms. Sam loved working with local youth through the 4-H Program and Youth Rodeo Association. He was also recognized for his long-time participation in ranchland conservation programs by the USDA/ASCS. Sam’s family was very important to him and he and Polly were happiest together at the ranch. Sam is survived by his wife, Polly and his children, Louise Ledoux; Luann Pierce and husband Joey; and Lucy Jumper and husband Jimmy; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Marie Pierce and husband Daun Williams and children Ella and Grey; Laura and Turner Phipps and son Pierce; Rebecca and Miguel Vergara; Stephen and Nicole Humphrey. A graveside service was held in Ozona on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017 at Cedar Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to the Ozona United Methodist Church or Hospice of San Angelo.
