A car belonging to Joe Sellers Pierce was slightly damaged by fire Wednesday morning when a tire on a rear wheel was ignited from grass being burned along the highway between here and Barnhart by crews from the highway department. With Commissioner Ben Ingham, the county’s firefighting equipment, and a number of volunteer helpers on the scene, the highway crew is burning grass inside the right-of-way to cut down the hazard of grass fire from lighted matches and cigarettes tossed out by careless motorists traveling the roads.

A huge dirt moving machine, capable of digging and moving at a speed up to 28 miles per hour a capacity load of 13 cubic yards of earth, was added to Crockett County’s road building equipment this week when the county purchased such machinery from the Wm. K. Holt Machinery Co. at total price of $13,600. The machinery was purchased by the court after a demonstration in road construction work on the Hoover divide where dirt was being moved to make fills in the road. On a half mile haul, the big machine was moving ten to thirteen-cubic-yard loads at the rate of one every seven minutes.

First steps toward the start of construction of flood retardation dams on the upper reaches of the Johnson Draw watershed to protect the town of Ozona and downstream ranch lands from a repetition of the devastating flood of June 1954 were taken here Friday morning when three officials of the U. S. Soil Conservation Service met with the Crockett County Commissioners Court and the board of supervisors of the Crockett Soil Conservation District, local sponsors of the flood control project. The meeting was held in the office of Bob Scott, area conservationist with the SCS, in the Hotel Ozona.

Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Davis recently received word that their son, Pvt. Douglas E. Davis, a member of the armed forces serving in Vietnam, had been awarded the Army Commendation Medal for Heroism. The communication reads: “For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force: Private First Class Davis distinguished himself by heroic actions on 26 July 1966 in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, he was operating the 25th Aviation switchboard. During the period of 1920 to 2120 hours, the battalion headquarters was under heavy mortar and recoilless rifle attack.

A FAMILIAR SIGHT FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR - Fall shearing is in full swing in Crockett County. Light rain early Tuesday put off shearing on the John Lee Henderson ranch until noon, but the six shearers were going full blast shortly after noon. A top hand can shear up to 160 head per day.
