Tommy Sue “Susie” Chandler Black
July 01, 2026
Tommy Sue “Susie” Chandler Black passed away on June 29, 2026, at her home in Ozona. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the Ozona Methodist Church.
Susie was born on July 17, 1942, in San Angelo, Texas, the second child of E. H. Chandler, Sr. and Tommy Elizabeth Smith Chandler. She was raised in a ranching family and continued that legacy alongside her husband, Bill.
In 1960, Susie graduated from Ozona High School and went on to attend Texas Christian University. She and Bill were married on March 31, 1961. Together, they built a life on the ranch, where they raised their two children, Will M. Black and Sue Ellen Crawford. Susie was deeply involved in her children’s school, church and 4-H activities.
Susie and Bill expanded their ranching ventures through the Chandler and Black partnership, leasing properties across Crockett, Pecos, Terrell, and Val Verde Counties alongside her brothers Erby and Fred, and her son Will M. and his wife Vickie. Susie was known for organizing, hospitality, and preparing meals for the ranch hands and her family. She exemplified the role of a dedicated ranch wife, doing whatever was needed to support Bill in their ranching and business endeavors.
In addition to ranching, Susie and Bill operated Ozona Storage and Encino RV Park. Bill always loved a good livestock trade and Susie ensured everything ran smoothly- managing the books, overseeing the trades, and keeping Bill in line. She ran the businesses alongside her “right hand girl” and daughter in law, Vickie Reagor Black.
Susie was a member and past president of Ozona Woman’s League, 4-H Leader in cooking and sewing, a member of the Ozona Methodist Church, and a strong supporter of West Texas Rehab.
Susie and Bill spent countess hours supporting their children and grandchildren, attending sporting events, stock shows, ropings, and rodeos. They took great pride in passing down their love for agriculture and ranching to their family.
Susie will be remembered as a gracious hostess, an excellent cook, and the family’s documentarian. She cherished her family, including her sister-in- laws, who she loved as her own sisters. Her days were filled with purpose and hard work. Her family will treasure the time spent at the Black’s holiday gatherings. Susie maintained a beautifully kept home and was known for her delicious homemade rolls.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bill; and her daughter Sue
Ellen Crawford.
She is survived by her son Will M. Black and wife Vickie, and their children Murphey Black, and Allie Black and her daughter Ella. She is also survived by Sue Ellen’s children Weslee Beck and husband Tyson and their children Brit, Bodie and Taycee; Wendy Merritt and husband Zach and their daughters Maddie and Maysen; and
Whitney Wilson.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Marcus Sims, Romie Fierro, Melory Galindo, Pat Ortiz, Maddie Graham, Vicki Childress, and Veronica Fierro.
Memorials to Ozona Methodist Church or to West Texas Rehab would be welcomed.
A healthy Crockett County requires great community news.
