Ozona—The Lady Lions softball team is stepping into the 2026 season with fresh footing and high expectations.

With a newly installed turf field and a veteran roster led by a strong group of seniors, the Lady Lions are eager to build on last season’s success and make another postseason run.

Head softball coach Britni Duarte said each new season brings renewed motivation, but this year carries special significance with the addition of the new field.

“We always look to do better than we did last season,” Duarte said. “Getting to be on a new field this year means a lot. Having a big group of seniors, I hope that we are successful, have fun and make a lot of good memories on this field.”

Adjusting from a traditional dirt field to turf will be a learning process, but players say they are excited for the challenge.

Shortstop Mercedes Perez said the change will require teamwork and adaptability.

“I think it's going to be a learning experience because [we are] going from dirt to turf,” Perez said. “It's a big change, but I'm excited to see how we adapt and work together as a team.”

Third baseman Kadyn Dominguez echoed that sentiment, acknowledging the adjustment while embracing the upgrade.

“I miss dirt, but I love having a new field,” she said.

For Duarte, success this season goes beyond wins and losses. While another playoff appearance remains a priority, she said growth and consistency will define the team’s progress.

“A successful season for us would be making playoffs again but taking it one step further and being in the top three teams of the district,” she said. “Individual-wise [it would be] seeing girls playing strong ball by the end of April.”

As seniors, Perez and Dominguez are savoring their final season in a Lady Lions uniform.

“I am excited to play hard for one last year and have a good season,” Perez said.

Dominguez said the relationships within the team are what make this season special.

“I'm most excited that I'm finally a senior and I get to play with my best friends this year,” Dominguez said.

Duarte described the team’s current chemistry with a single word.

“Vibing,” she said. “Everybody’s clicking. We're all putting in work and playing for each other. We're ready to play.”

The Lady Lions open their season Feb. 10 against San Angelo Texas Leadership Charter Academy in Ozona. They will continue play at the Kerr County Classic Tournament beginning Feb. 13, where they are scheduled to face the Fredericksburg Billies and the Blanco Panthers.
