Students honored at NJHS induction
Ozona—Twenty-six Ozona Middle School students were recognized for their scholarship, leadership and service during the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) induction ceremony on Oct. 2.
The NJHS honors students who demonstrate excellence in academics and citizenship. To qualify, students must maintain a 90 or higher average in their core classes, submit five teacher recommendations, and complete both a personal statement and a record of extracurricular activities.
Recognizing Achievement and Character
OMS Principal and NJHS adviser Chaslyn Feaster said the program recognizes more than just good grades.
“The National Junior Honor Society is not just based on grades but what kind of student they are,” Feaster said. “Do they have leadership skills? Do they have service skills? Once they're in the chapter, the chapter is all about servant leadership. So, they are doing some type of community service project, giving back, trying to figure out how to make their school better. It really is a student leadership organization.”
The five pillars of NJHS, scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character, serve as guiding principles for members throughout their time in the organization.
Students Reflect on the Process
Seventh graders Jude Fierro and Ainsley Morris spoke at the ceremony about the application process, while Rose Morrow discussed writing the required essays.
“To get into NJHS, I had to fill out a packet and write an essay about why I wanted to be in NJHS,” Morris said. “It was about why you would be a good member.”
Building Leaders Through Service
OMS counselor and NJHS sponsor Taylor Cervantez said the organization teaches students the value of leadership and community engagement.
“NJHS is a great opportunity for our students to learn leadership skills and take initiative,” Cervantez said. “I like to focus on the community service aspect and help them understand how important it is to give back to our community and our school.”
Pride and Accomplishment
For many new members, the honor represents both personal achievement and a commitment to their community.
“It's like a big deal to me because I really like helping our community,” Morris said.
“It means that you're going to be loyal to your people and your community,” Morrow said.
“My parents are proud of me because they know that I'm with the smart kids,” Brady Fierro said.
“I feel very proud of myself,” Jude Fierro said.
