ozona high school won fourth place out of 23 schools in the Sonora Literary meet held Feb. 6-7.
OHS Academic Team competes at three area meets
The OHS UIL Academic Team has been busy the last few weeks traveling to several area meets.
On Jan. 24, the students won second place in the Mertzon meet.
The Current Issues and Events team of Josh Smith, Matthew Komechak and Wilson White brought home gold medals, with Wilson winning first as an individual.
The Number Sense team of Daniel Anderson, Ethan English, Heather Thompson and Ruben Rivas also won first place, with Daniel winning second place individually.
Rounding out the gold medals was the Computer Science team of Ethan English, Heather Thompson and Lane White, with Ethan winning first, Heather winning second and Lane winning sixth individually.
The Calculator team of Daniel Anderson, Kara Bird, Lane White and Ruben Rivas brought home a silver medal, with Daniel winning another silver and Kara winning bronze as individuals.
Our Cross-Examination Debate team of Barbara Caperton and Iris Vergara did very well, winning second place after debating multiple rounds.
Finishing up the awards was Amber Lewis, who won fifth place in the Accounting contest.
Clarissa Burciaga, Duncan Knox, Lalo Longoria, Jadyn Poindexter, and Rebecca Rueffer also competed and represented Ozona High School with pride.
On Feb. 6-7, the OHS Team won fourth place at the Sonora meet. This meet, the oldest in West Texas, was attended by 23 schools.
Lane Hale won first as an individual in Headline Writing. The Computer Science team of Ethan English, Heather Thompson, Clarissa Burciaga and Michael Medina also won first, with Ethan winning first, Heather winning second, and Clarissa winning fourth as individuals.
The Number Sense team of Ethan English, Ruben Rivas, Daniel Anderson and Heather Thompson was second, with Ethan winning second and Ruben winning fifth as individuals.
Also performing well was the Calculator team of Daniel Anderson, Kara Bird, and Ruben Rivas, which placed second. Daniel won second and Kara placed fifth in this event. The Mathematics team of Ethan English, Heather Thompson, Daniel Anderson and Ruben Rivas placed third overall, with Ethan in fourth as an individual.
The Accounting team of Amber Lewis, Cheyenne Coy, and Miranda Munoz came on strong, placing third. Amber brought home the third place bronze medal in this contest.
Rounding out the awards on Friday was Josh Smith in Current Issues and Events. He brought home the sixth place in that event.
Several other students competed throughout the day: Eric Carrazales, Tevin Cordova, Latham Ducote, Gaby Gutierrez, Julie Gutierrez, Kramer Hall, Emalee Hamilton, Nathan Knox, Matthew Komechak, Lalo Longoria, Sarah Lott, Alexandria Macias, Melissa Miller, Fabian Onate, Hunter Perez, Jadyn Poindexter, Kelsie Ramirez, Rebecca Rueffer, and Chelsea Spence.
Michael Medina traveled back to Sonora on Saturday to compete in Lincoln-Douglas debate.
On Feb. 9, the Computer Science Teams competed at the Wall Invitational Hands-On Programming Contest.
Here they would line up against two teams from the defending state champions from Wall High School. The competition was tight, but the Ozona teams stayed tough.
When it was over, the top team of Ethan English, Heather Thompson, and Lane White came out on top with a score of 37 points. Wall’s top team was breathing right down their necks with a score of 36 points. Wall’s second team placed third, followed by the two remaining teams of Corey Kelley, Michael Medina and Jayce Logan, who placed fourth, and Clarissa Burciaga and Duncan Knox, who placed fifth.
It was an exciting night, and everybody benefitted from the competition. We all are looking forward to the continuing season. Hopefully, the teams will face each other again in Austin at the state competition. Keep up the good work, Lions.
Lady Lions end season against Presidio
The Ozona Lady Lions finished an exciting season on Feb. 10.
The Lady Lions fought hard against Presidio, but the Lady Devils came up with one-point, 49-48, victory.
Score by quarters: Ozona – 8 13 10 17 – 48; Presidio – 13 14 10 12 – 49.

“I really feel bad for the seniors finishing the season with a loss after the great season we had. It comes down to what we have talked about all year, starting the game with intensity. We did not so again, so we put ourselves in a hole and this time we couldn’t climb out. Another thing that hurt us was our inability to shoot free throws. We were 15-48 for the night and that hurts when you loose by one,” said Coach John Jackson. “Overall it has been a great season. I am looking forward to next year and the kids we have coming back”
The Lady Lions finish 17-11 overall and 6-6 in district play.
Eighth Grade Lions end season with win
The Eighth Grade Lions finished the season with a 29-26 win over Reagan County.
Score by quarters: Ozona – 4 8 11 6 – 29; Reagan County – 4 10 6 6 – 26.
Scoring: Tres Perez 9; Blake Morrow 5; Cuatro Jones 3; Alex Borrego 9; John David De Hoyos 1 and Jeffery Sanchez 2. Also playing: Jaquin Mesa, Brandon Dominguez, Matthew Galindo and Noah Tambunga.
“This was a great way for us to end the season. We played a tough game and did some really good things late in the game by hitting free throws down the stretch that kept us in the lead. I am very proud of the way these young men played this year. They fought all year long and in the end were able to win three in a row. We would like to thank the parents and all the fans that supported us all season long,” said Coach John Esparza.
7th Grade Lions finish with win over R.C. Owls
The Seventh Grade Lions won their final game, 38-19, against Reagan County on Feb. 9.

Eighth Grade Lady Lions stomp Reagan County
The Eighth Grade Lady Lions defeated Reagan County, 22-9, on Feb. 9.

The Eighth Grade Lady Lions B Team defeated Reagan County 12-4 on Feb. 9.

Scoring: Narce Unate 8 and Melynda Cordova 4. Also playing: Stephanie Cervantes, Jaylynn Vargas, Sierra Trevino, Jessica Borrego and Kelsea Perez.

7th Grade Lady Lions lose to RC
The Seventh Grade Lady Lions lost to Reagan County, 16-28, on Feb. 9.
