Eighth Grade Lions Tennis win district meet
The OMS Tennis Teams competed in the district meet on May 5 at Big Lake.
The Eighth Grade boys won the district title, with the Eighth Grade girls taking third.
The dynamic duo of Mark Gallardo and Ruben Galindo took first place in boys’ doubles. They defeated Harrison-Stuard, of Big Lake, 8-1, and then defeated Benitez-Perez, also of Big Lake, 8-0, for the first place win.
Also in boys’ doubles, Kramer Hall and Austin Perez took third place. The duo won against Reynosa-Ortiz, of Crane, 7-5 and then lost to Benitez-Perez, of Big Lake. They then defeated Harrison-Stuard, of Big Lake, 8-4 for third place.
In boys’ singles, Alejandro Mendez placed second after defeating Maggard, of Kermit, 8-2; Mary Moran, of Ozona, 8-5 and Rey, of Big Lake, 8-1.
Moran went on to take fourth place. In the first round, he defeated Mutiz, of Kermit, 8-0 before losing to Mendez and then Gower, of Kermit, 5-8.
In girls’ singles, Kelbie Renfroe won third place after defeating teammate Natalie Hernandez 9-7.
Renfroe defeated Warner, of Kermit, 8-5 in the first round, but then lost to Dorey, of Big Lake, 2-8, in the second round.
Hernandez had a first round bye and then lost to Weis, of Crane, 3-8 in the second round before facing Renfroe.
In mixed doubles, Steven Rubio and Jennifer Venegas took third placed. In the first round, the duo beat Saucedo-Zapata, of Big Lake, 8-6. They then lost to Witcher-Ramos, of Kermit, 6-8 and then beat Droigk-Tavarez, of Crane, 9-7 for third place.
Also competiting in mixed doubles was Craig Fluth and Dahlia Hernandez. In the first round, the duo lost to Droigk-Tavarez, of Crane, and then lost in consolation to Saucedo-Zapata 4-6.
For the Seventh Grade teams, the girls took third, with only two from Ozona competiting, and the boys took fourth.
In girls’ singles, Sabrina De La Garza won third place. De La Garza beat Blackburn, of Kermit, 8-0 in the first round. She then lost to Lem, of Crane, 5-8, in the second round, but beat Jones, of Crane, for third place.
Tesla Caperton won consolation against Vidal, of Big Lake, 6-2 in the third round. She beat Bolster, of Kermit, 5-8 in the first round, but lost to Blakerey, of Kermit, 6-0 in the second round.
In boys’ singles, Jeffery Sanchez won consolation after defeating teammate Cuatro Jones. Sanchez lost to Perez, of Big Lake, 5-8 in the first round. He then beat teammate Joquin Meza, 6-1 in the second round.
Jones lost to Morrison, of Crane, 6-8 in the first round, but beat teammate Jason Badillo 6-4 in the second round before losing to Sanchez.
Mesa lost his first match 4-8 to Bedman, of Kermit, and Badillo lost his first match to Francis, of Kermit 2-8.

Baseball camp starts Friday
Ozona Baseball Camp May 16, 17, 24 and 31 at the Ozona Baseball Fields. Registration 8:30 a.m. May 16.
Ages 10 -12 Cost is $25 per participant for the camp or $10 a day. Each day will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. with a lunch break from noon-1:30 p.m.
The fundamentals of baseball will be stressed. Participants must wear cleats, baseball pants and bring their own glove. Make sure names are on their gloves. Each participant will receive a T-shirt and a baseball.

Chase Moore wins Lone Star Conference Championship, headed to national meet
Chase Moore, son of Hollis and Shona Moore, and son-in-law of Douglas and Tina Bean competed in the Lone Star Conference Championships on May 2-4 at the track and field complex of Abilene Christian University.
Chase competed in the Decathlon on May 2-3 scoring 6,669 points to win the Conference Championship in the Decathlon.
A decathlon consists of competing in the 100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400-meter dash on the first day and then the 110-hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and the 1,500-meter run on the second day.
After completing the two day, ten event Decathlon, Chase also competed in individual events of the Long Jump, Javelin, Pole Vault and High Jump.
Chase finished eighth in the javelin and fourth in the high jump.
Chase is a junior at Angelo State University and the husband of Alexandra Bean Moore.
