2011 is Crockett County's driest year

It was a year to remember; a dry year. Since 1931, 2011 is Crockett County's driest year on record. According to data from the Crockett County Groundwater District, the county only received an average of 5.54 inches of rain. The last time Crockett County saw a yearly average in single digits was 1956 when the county received 9.11 inches. In fact, the county received more rain per year during the infamous 1950s drought than 2011. In 1951, the yearly average was 7.23 and 1952 saw 8.27 inches. Since 1995, Crockett County has seen up and down periods with high totals being 34.75 in 2004 and 28.89 in 2007. Prior to 2011, the lowest since 1995 has been 13.02 in 2006. Congressional candidate
Pete Gallego visiting Ozona today

State Representative and candidate for U.S. Congress Pete Gallego, D-Alpine, is stopping in Ozona today (Feb. 1) to meet with the public and the Crockett County Commissioners.
The informal meeting will be at noon at El Chato's Restaurant. The meeting is open to the public.
Gallego is a native of Alpine, graduate of Sul Ross State University and the University of Texas School of Law and has served as State Representative since 1990.
Now, Gallego is running in the Democratic Primary for U.S. Representative of District 23, currently held by Republican Francisco "Quico" Canseco.
Gallego is being challenged in the primary by John Bustamante, of San Antonio.
In a press release Monday, Gallego announced his strong support for banning members of Congress from insider trading, saying it was simply common sense to hold Congress accountable to the same laws as everyone else.
Gallego announced his support of the Stop Trading On Congressional Knowledge, or STOCK Act, that would impose that ban.
A recent "60 Minutes" exposé revealed that Members of Congress were engaging in insider stock trades—all completely legally since Congress exempted itself from the federal law against the practice.
"I am for making it illegal for Congress to engage in insider trading and so is 99.9 percent of everyone else on Earth. The only ones against making insider trading for Congress are a few Members of Congress like Congressman Canseco," said Gallego. "This is why this is the most unpopular Congress in our history, and it's also why we need a new Congressman."
